A stone hits your screen on Ring Road and leaves a mark. The question everybody asks is whether it can be filled. The answer comes down to four things: size, position, depth and age.
Size
Small chips — roughly up to the size of a 1-rupee coin — are usually repairable. Resin is injected into the break, cured, and the damage becomes far less visible while the glass regains its strength.
Long cracks are a different matter. Once damage runs past about 15 centimetres, a repair cannot restore the structural integrity of the panel, and the crack will keep travelling. That one is a replacement.
Position — the rule most people miss
Where the damage sits matters more than how big it is. Two positions force a replacement regardless of size:
In the driver's line of sight. Repair resin never leaves the glass perfectly clear — there is always slight distortion at the repair. Directly in your view, that distortion is a safety issue in its own right, so the correct call is a new screen.
At the edge of the glass. The perimeter is where the structural stress concentrates. Edge chips run into full cracks quickly, often within days, and a repair there does not hold.
Depth
A windscreen is two layers of glass with a plastic interlayer between them. If the damage has only broken the outer layer, resin can fill it. If it has gone through to the inner layer — or if you can feel the chip from inside the car with a fingernail — the panel is compromised and must be replaced.
Age and contamination
Chips repair best when they are fresh. Over days and weeks, dust, water and road grime work into the break, and once contaminated the resin cannot bond cleanly. The repair then looks cloudy and does not hold properly.
If you have a repairable chip, get it done soon. A chip attended to within a few days is a small job. The same chip left for a month through hot afternoons and cold nights is usually a new windscreen.
What makes a small chip turn into a crack
Understanding this tells you why urgency matters. Glass expands when it heats and contracts when it cools, and a chip is a weak point that concentrates that stress. Lahore gives a windscreen a hard time on all counts.

- Repairable, probably: a single chip smaller than a 1-rupee coin, away from your line of sight, not near the edge, only in the outer layer, and only a few days old
- Replace: anything longer than ~15 cm · anything in the driver's view · anything at the edge · star or spider breaks · several chips · damage through to the inner layer · a chip that was already repaired once
Things that make a chip spread faster
Heat and cold shock
- Parking in direct sun then blasting the AC at the screen
- Pouring cool water on a hot windscreen while washing
- Cold nights after very hot days
Physical stress
- Speed breakers and broken road surfaces
- Slamming doors with all windows closed
- Body flex from potholes
- Pressure washing directly at the chip
A temporary measure, not a fix: putting a piece of clear tape over a fresh chip keeps dirt and water out until you get it looked at. It does nothing structurally, but it keeps the break clean enough to be repairable for longer.
Is a cracked windscreen dangerous?
It is easy to treat a crack as cosmetic, and it is not. The windscreen is a bonded structural part of the car body: it contributes significant strength to the roof in a rollover, and the passenger airbag inflates against it, using it as a backboard. A compromised screen can fail at exactly the moment those two things matter.
Add the everyday problem — a crack scatters oncoming headlights at night and low sun in the morning, right where you are trying to look — and it stops being a small issue.

Frequently asked questions
Can a long crack in a windscreen be repaired?
No. Once damage runs past roughly 15 centimetres, a resin repair cannot restore the structural strength of the glass and the crack will continue to spread. That needs replacement.
Why does a chip in front of the driver need replacement even if it is small?
Repair resin always leaves slight distortion. Directly in the driver's field of view that distortion is itself a hazard, so replacement is the safe option.
How quickly should I get a chip repaired?

Damage that obstructs the driver's view can attract a fitness or traffic penalty, and it may also affect an insurance claim after an accident. Beyond the legal question, it is a genuine safety risk.
Can I stop a crack from spreading?
Only temporarily. Avoid heat shock such as AC blasted onto a hot screen, avoid rough roads and slamming doors, and cover a fresh chip with clear tape to keep it clean until it is inspected.
